Can Mosquitoes Spread Coronavirus?
Although the stay at home orders are lifted, coronavirus may still be a worry for you and your family as you head outside. You may be concerned about a potential spread from a common source of worrying diseases in the past – mosquitoes. A mosquito bite can be responsible for infecting a person with several worrying diseases, but is coronavirus one of them?
The good news is that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) all agree that mosquitoes cannot spread coronavirus. In order for these notorious disease spreaders to spread a disease, it must be able to replicate in their gut and salivatory glands, or in simpler terms, they must be able to become infected by it to pass it on to a human host. They cannot be infected. As coronavirus is transmitted through airborne droplets from a cough or sneeze, and as such, it cannot be transmitted by mosquitoes.
That was the good news, but let us not forget that mosquitoes are responsible for spreading a laundry list of other potential horrible diseases every year. What diseases mosquitoes can spread include:
- West Nile Disease
- Zika
- Dengue Fever
- Yellow Fever
- Malaria
- Canine Heartworms
- A Variety of Encephalitis
This means that while you can enjoy your socially distant time outside, mosquitoes around your home still should be dealt with for your safety.
The best thing you can do is remove areas of standing water that are responsible for breeding the next generation of mosquitoes. However, if you already have the adults hanging around, you may need professional intervention.
